Audit Needed of Taxpayer Funds Reimbursed to Trump Campaign

(WASHINGTON) – Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, requested an audit from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) of taxpayer funds expended to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Campaign. During an election season, certain Federal government entities are required to provide services to presidential campaigns, such as the U.S. Secret Service's candidate protection. The American taxpayer – not the campaign – assumes the financial liability for these transactions. Congressman Thompson believes it is imperative that we know whether or not the entities owned by the candidate are subjecting taxpayers to egregious charges since he has a direct, financial interest.

In the request to GAO, Congressman Thompson states:

“Americans expect transparency in the election process. I do not believe that American taxpayers expect people running for elected office to gain a profit. At a time when some have speculated that this presidential candidate seeks to commercialize running for office, I believe that it is essential that the taxpayers know how much of their hard earned dollars go into a candidate’s pocket.”
